United Petroleum
A Bold New Benchmark in Service Station Design United Petroleum, one of Australia’s leading independent fuel and convenience brands, is known for pushing the boundaries of innovation. Their latest project in Victoria is no exception — a first-of-its-kind service station, featuring a striking canopy inspired by the wings of a jet. Soaring an impressive nine meters into the air, this architectural marvel demanded a lighting solution that would not only enhance its dramatic design but also deliver brilliant, consistent illumination across the site.

Our Role

Tasked with lighting this extraordinary structure, we delivered exceptional performance while keeping energy efficiency front of mind. Our system achieved an average of 290 lux on the ground at each pump — ensuring a bright, welcoming environment — all while maintaining a low total energy consumption of just 4,625 watts. To extend visibility across the parking and driveway areas, we deployed our powerful PML2A luminaires, enhancing safety and elevating the customer experience.

The Solution

For the canopy itself, the PDL3 was selected thanks to its slim, minimalist design. Each luminaire was custom-wrapped in outdoor-grade vinyl, perfectly complementing the wood grain and sleek silver finish of the canopy’s underside. To cover the expansive site, PML2A fixtures — offering a Type III light distribution pattern, 9700 lumen output, and optional Photocell and Motion Sensor integrations — were the clear choice. This combination provided seamless, even lighting without disrupting the visual integrity of the design.

The Results

The project not only met but exceeded expectations. Our lighting solution, powered by the renowned SloanLED light engine, maintained an impressive 290 lux at every pump. Even with 37 luminaires installed, the total energy consumption remained exceptionally low at 4,625 watts. Additionally, seven PML2A pole-mounted lights ensured uniform brightness and heightened visibility across the entire forecourt, creating a visually stunning and highly functional environment.

Today, United Petroleum’s Victoria flagship stands not just as a place to refuel, but as a symbol of what’s possible when cutting-edge design meets intelligent lighting.
